On the 26th May at the University of Auckland Business School, Chiasma held its 2008 I-Volve Prizegiving. Being excluded from the administrative, entry and judging process this year, I decided to utilise one of the many ideas floating in my head and construct a entry from it (called KeraZyme). This year I focused on proposing a novel treatment for a skin disorder that not only I suffer from, but also an alarming percentage of the population as well. I entered alongside my partner Megan Barrett-Hamilton (a bioscience enterprise student) and to our surprise we were successful at picking up the grand prize of $5000. I had previously been successful in the competition in 2006 as well.
Dr. Stuart MacLachlan, CEO of Anzamune, a newly formed spin off from UK based CMP Therapeutics, was the guest speaker for the night. Anzamune, winners of the NZBio Deal of the Year in conjunction with BPV, are commercializing micronised chitin for use in relieving allergic reactions. It does this by regulating the TH1 and TH2 immune responses. Rather than inhibiting one or the other, the chitin acts to shift the balance back towards the TH2 response from the TH1, the one that is set off and contributes to allergic reactions.
KeraZyme – 55sec elevator pitch
“50% of the people in this room have an incurable genetic, dermatological disorder. And with current treatments exhibiting poor efficacy and several undesired side effects you may be wondering, what the future holds for you? But don’t despair KeraZyme is here, a novel and pioneering skin cosmoceutical, to directly target and alleviate the cause of this commercially attractive skin imperfection.
The world is becoming more appearance driven and there is a growing awareness of health and wellness. This is driving consumers to become more confident in treating complex skin care conditions. And with the world cosmoceutical market worth an estimated US$30 billion with certain countries experiencing greater than an 80% annual increase, KeraZyme is ideally placed to capture and transform the population of keratosis pilaris suffers.
So Free your follicles now, with KeraZyme “
